Well, I'm really excited, about tomorrow, I've been waiting for my new "electric" wheelchair for a long time now, and tomorrow, hopefully everything will work out where they will be delievering it to my home. For those of you who haven't checked my profile, yet, you might not know that I'm disabled, I have a disability called "Spina Bifida" there are different kinds of Spina Bifida, and I don't have one of the worst ones, but still when I was born, I had problems with my Spine being exposed, and what happened was when they cut the part that was exposed it had nerves in it, leaving me partly paralized from the waste down, at least in the beginning anyway. Before 1998, I was able to transfer in and out of my manual wheelchair, and in and out of cars, able to wheel all over my town here and there, but in 1998, I had what was suppose to be a simple spine untethering, where they remove scar tissue away from my spine, that was made during birth, and well, something went wrong, after my surgery which was right before Thanksgiving, I was sent home, While being home, I wasn't able to do much of anything including help my mom with anything, After much arguing with my neurosurgeon, he said fine, and I was taken back to the hospital everything looked like I'd be home in a day or two, and then all hell broke loose, I started to get really bad headaches, and nausea along with vomitting, this went on for a long time, during that time I was in a Rehab Center, near the hospital, and I kept telling them something is wrong, they choose to believe it was constipation, and were treating it like that, well after a month of that, (none of it worked) and by then Christmas was coming up, and I wanted to go home for the day, most of the Rehab people who could did, Christmas Eve while my family was home celebrating the evening, I was in Rehab discovering that what had been all of these headaches and nausea and vomitting, was really because I was leaking spinal fluid out for my wound in my lower back. The nurse there, was helping me change for bed, when she suddenly realized my back was dripping fluid. Well the next day was Christmas and as scheduled I somehow managed to get ready and get in my parents car and go home for the day, I mean after all it was Christmas no Doctors would be able to see me, and they would have to be requested anyhow, I knew the risks, of the leakage, and it had already been a month of it doing it, and I was still alive -Thankfully, By 8:30pm E.S.T I was already ready to go back to the Rehab Center, where I was staying, when we got back, we found out my neurosurgeon would be in to restitch me, They tried for 4 days unsuccessfully, only to then on Jan 4th, have to take me back in to the Operating Room, or "OR" and reopen my wound and stitch it closed once again, hoping it would stop the drips, when I got out of surgery, I went back to the Rehab Room, not planned, but still thats where they wanted me, and could do nothing for a few days no Therapy, no nothing. my back had to heal. It took until Jan 15th, for everything to finally get better, and I was finally able to go home that day.
A few weeks later, I woke up unable to breath, and it was determined that I need to go back into the hospital because I had pneumonia, I spent 4 weeks in the same hospital I had my back surgery at but while I was there this time, because I was screaming in pain, the nurse accidently overdosed me on pain medication. Needless to say that was the last time I was at that hospital. After 4 long painful weeks, I finally got to go home. Things were great yet thou, I was in and out of the hospital for back pain issues until one morning in October of 99, I woke up around 6:30am, with a really really bad headache, and I couldn't stand looking at the light, and wanted to cover my head, When I got to the hospital it was determined that I had meningitis, at this point, I said, what else could go wrong, geez,... and I was then told that my shunt, and shunt (a pump I had in my head since birth) had to be removed, now here I am, I have long hair, and they need access to my brain area, Oh hell no..... well, thankfully, the doctor knew I was growing my hair, and didn't shave it all off on me, I was so happy once I woke up to see my hair on, I didn't even notice that my face was all beatup...LOL . After all of that I was finally able to go home, and I believe I was home just in time for Thanksgiving, a year of everything going wrong.. things still aren't back to normal now, I've been left with constant pain in my lower back, I'm on really bad pain killers all day, I'm not able to push myself around my town anymore, or do much of anything myself anymore, and now my legs are swollen all the time, making transfering in and out of my bed harder because I can't lift them, So, that is why I'm finally getting an electric wheelchair, after years of my parents telling me no, I don't need that, I'm finally at the point where I do.
On a side note, I had a second dose of pneumonia only a few years ago, thankfully, we caught much of it, this last time, and it wasn't as bad as the first time.
Well, I guess I'll be signing off for now, I'll drop another post later on tomorrow sometime.
Bye for now.
